October 09, 2025
Hastings, NE — Families preparing for the upcoming winter season are invited to attend the Second Annual Kid’s Connect “Cool Weather Kick-Off” event, hosted by the Healthy Families Nebraska Heartland program. The event will take place on Thursday, October 16, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at First Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, located at 501 N. Burlington Avenue in Hastings.
This free community gathering is designed to help families connect with local resources and organizations that support children’s health, education, and well-being. “Our goal is to create a space where families can build relationships with service providers, engage with other families, and take proactive steps to prepare for the winter months,” said Brooke Wolfe, Program Manager for South Heartland District Health Department’s Healthy Families Nebraska Heartland initiative.
A wide range of agencies will be on hand to share information and offer services, including United Way, Early Head Start, Medicaid, After School Care, UNL Extension, Heartland Health Center, Region 3, Public Housing, Hastings Police Department, and many others.
Attendees can also take advantage of free dental screenings, haircuts, winter coats, food, and other on-site services. “We encourage families to bring their children and enjoy an afternoon of fun, connection, and preparation for the season ahead,” Wolfe added.
Healthy Families Nebraska Heartland is a free, voluntary home-visiting program that fosters strong parent-child relationships, supports healthy development, and empowers parents in their caregiving journey.
